oh yes........that featured yet another comical Inzamam run out, c/o Steve Harmison, who found it easier to hit the stumps by throwing the ball, rather than bowling it.

Didn't Ashley Giles have two of three stumps 'plucked from the turf' by a single delivery from Mr. Shoaib 'genital warts' Akhtar during that series?

Re: 1st Test: England vs Pakistan (Lords)
The last series in Pakistan was the post Ashes piss up. Most the side were injured, pissed or not trying.

Shoaib won a game from nowhere after Bell and KP ran wild.

Re: 1st Test: England vs Pakistan (Lords)
Didn't England win in PAK the last time we played there, in the dark test, or are you talking about playing PAK in an away game that might be in the Middle East?

As for leg spinners, from what I saw at Lord's, Yasir doesn't do massive leg breaks on a regular basis. Lots of straight ones and the odd turner. That said, my plan against leg spinners was play for a leg break, and if it turned the other way then kick it. That was in the days of non-front foot LBWs. Wait for long hops and full tosses, or block or kick it.

Batting against Pak was entertaining.......no idea what they were saying or bowling. Sarfraz was piss pace.

Is leg spin that much of a problem in Test cricket ?
Yasir & the West Indian Bishoo have each played 13 Tests & Imran Tahir is more of a short form player & has played 20.
Part of England's problem is that they don't play many.
At the moment

I think India away might be a bit harder for England this time as the pitch fixers will be back on duty. Last time the judgement was that in Swann & Panesar England had superior spinners so India magically managed to prepare less spin infested surfaces.
Matty, When was England's last Test win in Pakistan?

Won in India, won in Bangladesh, drew in Sri Lanka, havent lost in Pakistan for over a decade.

Useless!

Re: 1st Test: England vs Pakistan (Lords)
Combination of the two really wasn't it? Finn leaked runs in the first innings and gave them a head start, but normally when you make mistakes you hope others might bail you out a but and the batsmen failed to do that. We did the cricket equivalent of scoring two own goals and then missing 3 open goals.

How Finn didn't get a wicket in the second innings is totally beyond me though - he really was very unlucky. But I'm still not convinced he's reliable enough, and he's so expensive when not on his game. But would dropping him shatter his obviously fragile confidence again, that's only recently started building up again?

It's an issue as Woakes is excellent and ball showed some potential and promise that needs developing through playing. And Jimmy takes the pressure off developing players some what as he takes he wickets and makes the difference that means you don't need to rely on them for the breakthrough.

Of course the bowling matters for nothing if we can't actually earn to defend against a leg spinner, and I can't believe I'm still saying that after years of watching warne decimate us. Our pitches aren't even that great for spin and we still can't cope - well be even alive by it in Pakistan or India

Re: 1st Test: England vs Pakistan (Lords)
I'd blame the England batsmen more than Finn, couldn't gate past 275 in either innings.

VirginiaHam 3:09 Thu Jul 21
Re: 1st Test: England vs Pakistan (Lords)
Finn was unlucky in the 2nd innings, and shit in the first innings. He couldn't bowl two balls in the same place. In may ways, that's why PAK got 339 and we lost the game.

With Anderson in the side they wouldn't have got near 339. I thought Woakes was outstanding too.

Re: 1st Test: England vs Pakistan (Lords)
agree re finn - he was v unlucky at lords

all the pak players will go after moeen if he plays. Misbah & Younis will also fancy their chances v adil. trying to be a bit player has done moeen no favours and the selectors are continuing the trend of picking an all rounder rather than a specialist.

Re: 1st Test: England vs Pakistan (Lords)
Definitely time to give rashid a go. Alisha's been used a lot to little effect and needs to do some serious work on his bowling as there hasn't been a massive improvement in the last 3 years

Finn will always be an enigma - he was really unlucky in the Sri Lanka series, often our best bowler with few rewards. In that first test last week he was woeful in the first innings, then woefully unlucky in the second. Really seems to lack the required consistency which makes him an expensive risk.

I dismissed Phillipe at Lord's, first ball. For some reason RDV Knight decided I was going to bounce him out, so he spent 5 minutes once Henri had arrived at the crease altering the field to include a short leg, man on the hook, leg slip etc, and I was told that the next ball I bowled was not to be pitched up. This, by the captain, under Henri's nose.

I ran up and delivered the required bouncer, Henri was about 15 minutes early, missed the ball completely and then fell over and landed on his stumps. Hit Wicket bowled Mackintosh. 0. Lord's, 1982. We all collapsed about laughing, and Henri walked off, dusting himself down and threatening me with all sorts of shit.

I was on a hat trick, Cowans in next. Managed a no-ball, but bowled him next ball. Ended up with 6 fer........

The next time I faced Henri his first ball whizzed over my head and went for four byes. I knew it was coming. Fucking hilarious.

Time to get lyth back in!!!

Makes me happier about essex's bowling watching this Durham mob.

You have to be truly shit to let lyth get a T20 50 against you. One of the worst openers in the format there is.

Grump ... When Matty asks 'Any news on ...' it means 'I am wanking over a scorecard and have the highlights on a loop'

Yesterday at Lords
Nepal 217/8 50 overs
MCC 176 all out
Two humiliations in a week

Re: 1st Test: England vs Pakistan (Lords)
Very easy win Matty.

Wood and curren (Tom) tore them apart with the ball with Pakistan out for 244 (sharjeel Khan 125).

For England, basically everyone average with the bat with scores around 30 while duckett smashed a magnificent 168no from about 100 balls.

Won with 14 overs to spare 148/3.

Some potential in that team, here's hoping the mental side is within them all to face the better players.

With a white ball Jones probably had a point about the white wristband but it was a bit unwise.
